What is a Pediatric Consult?

Sometimes parents have concerns about their child that they’d like to discuss with their pediatrician for longer than a standard office visit allows. Our pediatric consultation visits, usually simply referred to as consults, give parents the opportunity to meet with a physician or nurse practitioner for prolonged visits, so all of their concerns can be addressed.

Most pediatric consults are scheduled for 30 minutes, but should you need a longer appointment to address your concerns, we’re happy to accommodate you. Our goal is to provide thorough answers to all of your questions and work with you to develop a treatment plan moving forward.

Benefits of Consults

Pediatric consults offer many benefits:

  • More time. Scheduling a consult allows you and your child to have more time with the doctor or nurse practitioner than you would in a typical appointment. You’ll have time to ask questions and discuss a particular concern more in-depth.
  • Additional information. Through a consult you receive more information to help you make the best decision for your child’s continued care or how to handle a particular situation at home or at school.
  • Privacy. Consults can be private between you and the doctor or nurse practitioner while your child waits in another room in our office. This allows you to discuss sensitive topics without your child present.
  • Higher quality care. A consult allows us to provide your child with higher quality care because we have time to get more details about the situation that could have an impact on the type of care or treatment they may need.

Topics We Cover in Consults

Some topics you may wish to discuss in a consult with your child’s pediatrician include:

  • Problems in school
  • Possible ADHD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Behavioral problems
  • Children with frequent infections
  • Concussions
  • Chronic headaches
  • Weight management
  • Toileting difficulties
  • Growth problems
  • Insomnia

Why Choose Advocare Haddon Pediatric Group?

We believe that children should play an active role in their own medical care, but we also realize that there are some sensitive topics that parents would rather discuss directly with a pediatrician to keep their child from feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable. In those situations, older children can be brought to an empty exam room to wait while parents speak to their physician or nurse practitioner. For younger children, it can help to have an additional adult (parent, grandparent) who can watch the child while the discussion continues. Our pediatric consult appointments allow us to provide the best possible care for your family by ensuring that parents have the support they need from their child’s medical home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need to schedule a consult?

In certain situations when you know you have a specific concern or topic you’d like to ask some questions about, you should schedule a consult. This allows more time to be given to your child and the concerns you have beyond just a regular appointment.

How long does a consult last?

A typical consult is scheduled for about 30 minutes, but if you need more time, please let us know when scheduling. We want to be sure to give you and your child the attention you need and deserve.

Do I need someone to watch my child during the consult?

If you are planning to have a private consult, it can help to have someone with you who can watch your child if they are young. An older child can sit in another exam room and wait while the consult takes place. You know your child best so be sure to plan accordingly.

Do I need a consult to get my child a referral to a specialist?

You don’t necessarily have to schedule a consult for us to provide you with a referral to a specialist, but it may help to have a longer conversation first to determine if and what kind of specialist is needed.
